How big is the Canadian digital audio market?
$258 million in 2024, growing 13.9%. That is 1.4% of total Canadian internet advertising revenue — a small share of a very large number.
| Segment | Revenue | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Total digital audio | $258M | 100% |
| — Streaming audio | $159.2M | 61.7% |
| — Podcasts | $98.8M | 38.3% |
| Year-on-year growth | +13.9% | down from +15.7% |

| English-language share | — | 88.4% |
| French-language share | — | 11.6% |
IAB Canada Internet Advertising Revenue Survey 2024, published October 2025. Figures in CAD.
Two things stand out. The growth rate is decelerating, from 15.7% to 13.9%. And the French-language share, at 11.6%, is well below Quebec's share of the Canadian population — which is either a gap in the market or a gap in the measurement, and worth testing rather than assuming.
Which programmatic audio platforms operate in Canada?
Two main exchanges, both with deep Canadian roots, plus the major DSPs.
| Platform | Role | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Triton Audio Marketplace | Exchange | Triton Digital is Montreal-founded and IAB-certified for podcast measurement. TAM integrates 40+ DSPs including The Trade Desk, Amazon DSP, DV360, Adobe Advertising Cloud, Magnite, Yahoo and StackAdapt, across broadcaster, podcast and streaming inventory. |
| Spotify Ad Exchange | Exchange | Live in Canada since April 2025, now 40+ DSPs. Covers audio, video, podcast and display inventory across Spotify's catalogue. |
| Amazon DSP | DSP | Open auction and private marketplace audio inventory, available in Canada. |
| Megaphone | Hosting and sales | Spotify-owned. Publishers hosted on Megaphone can book private marketplace deals via Spotify Ad Exchange from 2026. |
Compiled by Simplicity Media from platform documentation, September 2026.
The Canadian angle worth noting: Triton Digital, which runs the larger of the two audio exchanges serving this market, was founded in Montreal and remains IAB-certified for podcast measurement. Canadian audio adtech is unusually well developed relative to the size of the market it serves.
What inventory can you actually buy programmatically in Canada?
More than most planners assume, though not everything, and the gaps are in predictable places.
- Music streaming — Spotify through its own exchange, plus other streaming services through the Triton marketplace.
- Podcasts — programmatic podcast buying is available through Spotify Ad Exchange, and Megaphone-hosted publishers open up further inventory through private marketplace deals from 2026.
- Broadcaster streaming audio — Canadian radio brands' streaming inventory is reachable through the Triton marketplace.
- Not available programmatically: broadcast radio spots. Canadian radio remains a consultative, negotiated buy through the sales houses. There is no self-serve or programmatic route into an AM/FM schedule.
How does Simplicity buy programmatic audio?
We offer programmatic audio, and direct is our default. We hold direct relationships with the publishers, networks and sales houses we buy from, so the route is chosen on what the brief needs.
The case for keeping Canadian audio direct is specific rather than ideological:
- The best audio placements are relationships, not impressions. Host-read podcast reads, sponsorships and named-show buys are negotiated. They are also, consistently, the audio formats that perform.
- Self-serve already covers the low-budget end. Spotify's $250 minimum makes testing viable without any exchange in the middle.
- The cost stack stays visible. Media cost and our fee, with nothing unitemised between the client and the publisher.
Where programmatic earns its place
Audience-led targeting across many audio publishers at once, frequency management over a fragmented buy, and campaigns needing retargeting or identity matching. If that is the brief, we will run it programmatically and say so.
A limit of the data worth naming either way: no published Canadian source quantifies what programmatic audio adds in incremental reach over a direct buy, in either direction. Spotify claims 96% unique new audience from adding podcasts to a campaign, but publishes no methodology, and it is a vendor claim about its own platform rather than a Canadian cross-media study. We would not build a plan on it.
How does programmatic audio fit the Canadian listening picture?
It reaches the growing half of Canadian audio, not the biggest half. Both facts belong in a plan.
Signal Hill's nationally representative study of 6,161 Canadians aged 12+, fielded in May and June 2026, found 90% of Canadians listened to some audio yesterday, with ad-supported listening making up 49% of total audio time.
Within that ad-supported half: AM/FM radio 39%, YouTube and YouTube Music combined 25%, music streaming 24%, podcasts 9%, SiriusXM 2%. The digital portion — streaming plus YouTube plus podcasts — collectively exceeds radio, but no single digital platform comes close to it on its own.
The device and daypart split is what makes them complementary rather than competing. AM/FM is 68% car radio and peaks at 7am. Music streaming is 77% smartphone and peaks at 3pm. YouTube peaks at 8pm. A plan using two of those three is buying genuinely different listening occasions, not the same person twice.
Common Questions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How big is the digital audio advertising market in Canada?
Canadian digital audio advertising revenue was $258 million in 2024, growing 13.9% year on year, split between streaming audio at $159.2 million and podcasts at $98.8 million. That represents 1.4% of total Canadian internet advertising revenue. English-language inventory accounts for 88.4% of revenue and French-language 11.6%.
Which programmatic audio exchanges work in Canada?
The Triton Audio Marketplace, from Montreal-founded Triton Digital, integrates more than 40 DSPs across broadcaster, podcast and streaming inventory. Spotify Ad Exchange has operated in Canada since April 2025 and also connects more than 40 DSPs. Amazon DSP offers open auction and private marketplace audio inventory in Canada.
Can you buy Canadian radio programmatically?
No. Broadcast radio spots in Canada remain a consultative, negotiated buy through the sales houses, with no self-serve or programmatic route into an AM/FM schedule. Canadian radio brands' streaming audio inventory is available programmatically through the Triton marketplace, but that is streaming, not broadcast.
What share of Canadian audio listening carries advertising?
49% of total Canadian audio time is ad-supported, according to Signal Hill Insights' study of 6,161 Canadians aged 12 and over fielded in May and June 2026. Within that, AM/FM radio holds 39%, YouTube and YouTube Music 25%, music streaming 24%, podcasts 9% and SiriusXM 2%.
Should Canadian advertisers buy audio programmatically or direct?
Direct for host-read podcast placements, sponsorships where the association is the point, and named-show buys where a specific publisher's audience is the reason for the plan — which covers most of what performs in audio. Programmatic when the audience definition is tighter than any single publisher's inventory, when frequency needs managing across a fragmented buy, or when retargeting genuinely matters.
Does Simplicity Media offer programmatic audio?
Yes. Simplicity Media offers programmatic audio and holds direct relationships with the Canadian publishers, networks and sales houses it buys from. Direct is the default, because the audio formats that consistently perform — host-read podcast placements, sponsorships and named-show buys — are negotiated rather than auctioned.
