What is programmatic DOOH?
Buying digital out-of-home screen time through an automated auction rather than a negotiated contract. You bid for individual ad plays across many screens and owners at once, targeted by audience, location, time and often by external triggers.
The unit is the ad play, not the two-week poster cycle. That is the fundamental difference from a classic OOH buy, and it is what makes daypart, weather and audience triggering possible.
It also changes what a campaign can be. A brand can run one message on Toronto screens during morning commute and a different one on Vancouver screens at lunchtime, adjusted the same day, without renegotiating anything.
How much Canadian DOOH is traded programmatically?
Around 14.4% of Canadian DOOH spending in 2025, well behind the United States at roughly 24% in 2024.
We would attach a caveat to that number. It comes from invidis, a credible trade publication, but the underlying research house is not named and we could not trace it to a primary source. Treat it as directional.
What is not in doubt is the direction. Canadian DOOH is now over 60% of Canadian OOH revenue and COMMB's 2024 measurement update added API-ready programmatic capability, meaning COMMB-verified impressions can flow directly into programmatic buys. The infrastructure is in place; adoption is following.
Which platforms are actually active in Canadian DOOH?
A short list, and two of the most important are Canadian companies. One name you may still see quoted no longer exists.
| Platform | Role | Canadian relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Broadsign | SSP, CMS and ad serving | Montreal-headquartered and the central piece of Canadian DOOH infrastructure. Acquired Campsite in 2019, which already had Pattison and Astral relationships. |
| StackAdapt | DSP | Toronto-headquartered multi-channel DSP, integrated with Broadsign's SSP since January 2023. |
| Vistar Media | DSP and SSP | Active in Canada since 2018, when Astral opened 240 digital large format and street furniture faces to open exchange and private marketplace deals. |
| Perion One | Full-stack DOOH | Formerly Hivestack, the Montreal-founded platform. Perion announced and closed the acquisition on 12 December 2023 for $100M cash plus up to $25M in earn-outs. The Hivestack brand was retired on 27 February 2025 and folded into Perion One. |

A live correction
If a media plan, a rate card or an agency credentials deck still lists Hivestack as an active standalone Canadian platform, it is out of date. Perion bought the business on 12 December 2023 and retired the brand on 27 February 2025. It is a small thing, but it is a quick way to tell how recently a document was actually checked.
What are the buying routes for Canadian DOOH?
Four, and they are not interchangeable. Knowing which one a quote came through tells you most of what you need to know about it.
- Direct with the media owner. Pattison, Astral, Quebecor, Branded Cities and the regional owners. The only route for most classic inventory, for transit domination packages, and for landmark sites.
- Programmatic guaranteed or private marketplace. Fixed inventory and price, negotiated with the owner and transacted through a platform. Astral's inventory has been available this way since 2018.
- Open exchange. Auction-based across many owners. Strongest for audience-led targeting and short flighting, weakest for guaranteeing exactly where you appear.
- Self-serve marketplaces. The low-budget end. Useful for testing, though the Canadian figures these platforms publish are their own and unattributed.
How does Simplicity buy programmatic DOOH?
We offer programmatic DOOH, and direct is our default. We hold direct relationships with the Canadian owners — including regional and independent owners larger agencies do not typically trade with — so the route is chosen on the brief rather than on what we can reach.
The case for buying direct in Canadian OOH is unusually strong, for reasons specific to this market:
- Supply is concentrated. A handful of owners control most Canadian inventory, including regional and independent owners larger agencies do not typically trade with. Direct relationships are worth more here than in a fragmented market.
- The best sites are never on an exchange. Landmark spectaculars, station dominations, transit wraps, custom builds and experiential are negotiated, not auctioned.
- Peak windows go to committed buyers. Direct commitments get filled first. The open exchange gets what is left, which in a Q4 Canadian market is not much.
Where programmatic earns its place
Audience-led national activity across many small formats, very short bursts, and creative that triggers on live conditions such as weather, stock levels or a live score. If that is the brief, we will run it programmatically and say so.
Common Questions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is programmatic DOOH?
Programmatic digital out-of-home is the buying of individual digital screen ad plays through an automated auction rather than a negotiated contract. The unit is the ad play rather than a two-week poster cycle, which allows targeting by audience, location, daypart and external triggers such as weather, and allows creative to be changed mid-flight.
How much Canadian DOOH is bought programmatically?
Around 14.4% of Canadian DOOH spending in 2025, according to invidis, compared with roughly 24% in the United States in 2024. That figure should be treated as directional — invidis does not name the underlying research house and it could not be traced to a primary source.
Is Hivestack still operating in Canada?
Not under that name. Perion acquired Hivestack, the Montreal-founded DOOH platform, on 12 December 2023 for $100M cash plus up to $25M in earn-outs, and retired the Hivestack brand on 27 February 2025, folding its capabilities into Perion One. Any media plan or credentials document still listing Hivestack as an active standalone Canadian platform is out of date.
Which programmatic DOOH platforms operate in Canada?
Broadsign, headquartered in Montreal, is the central piece of Canadian DOOH infrastructure as an SSP and ad server. StackAdapt is a Toronto-headquartered DSP integrated with Broadsign since January 2023. Vistar Media has operated in Canada since 2018. Perion One carries the former Hivestack capabilities.
Should I buy Canadian DOOH programmatically or direct?
Direct when the specific site is the idea, when the campaign needs a custom build or special format, or when supply is tight in a peak window — which in Canada, where inventory is concentrated among a handful of owners, covers most briefs. Programmatic when the brief is audience-led national activity across many small formats, a very short burst, or creative that triggers on live conditions such as weather or a live score.
Does Simplicity Media offer programmatic DOOH?
Yes. Simplicity Media offers programmatic DOOH and holds direct relationships with the Canadian media owners, including regional and independent owners that larger agencies do not typically trade with. Direct is the default, because in Canadian OOH the best sites are negotiated rather than auctioned and supply is concentrated among a handful of owners.
